The former Top Tier 17U Americans picked up right where they left off in their first tournament after winning the 17U CABA World Series. Now seniors competing in the 18U division, Top Tier went a perfect 5-0 this past weekend in Cary, NC en route to winning the 2010 USA Baseball Labor Day Cup. The wood bat tournament was held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex and included teams from around the country. Top Tier was lead at the plate by 2012 infielder Ryan Koziol who went 3-3 in the championship game against SSK Baseball from Santa Rosa, California. Other offensive standouts included Bradley commit, Chris Godinez who was 6 for 13 on the week with 3 stolen bases, and Stevenson senior Michael Martin, who lead the team with 5 runs. Other top performers included Cory Kay (.411 OBP), Tim Barry (1 HR), Brian Rodemoyer (hit in 4 of the 5 games), Ricky Alfonso (6 stolen bases), and Chris Massimilian (great defensive contribution).
The real story of the weekend was Top Tier’s pitchers domination against the wood bats, surrendering only 5 runs in 5 games. The Stevenson duo of Tyler Radke and Kyle Ruchim paced the staff on the mound, both threw complete games with 8 and 10 strikeouts respectively. Paul Warble, Ryan Powers, and Jeremy Rhoades each earned wins and showcased the ability to throw multiple pitches for strikes. Max Allen, Isaac Greenspon, and Jordan Chudacoff provided valuable relief in the bullpen shutting down the opposition late in games.
